Traversing the 'volcanic heart' of Tongariro National Park, the Tongariro Norther Circuit is a four day tramp ideal for those seeking a challenge. The multi-day journey begins on the same track as the Tongariro Alpine Crossing - one of the most popular one-day hikes in the country. Day one concludes at Magatepopo Hut which is an 8.5 kilometre trail from the starting point at Whakapapa Village.
The next three days then lead hikers through a collection of incredible sights including the famous Emerald Lakes, stream valleys and old explosion craters. This trail isn't for the faint-hearted, however if you can endure the challenges of the trail you'll be well rewarded with the incredible views and sights along the way. There are huts along the way meaning you'll have somewhere comfortable to rest your head between hikes.
Visitors can choose to explore the trail on their own which includes booking all DOC accommodation along the way themselves, or there is the option of booking a guided tour with a local provider - the choice is yours. The trail starts and finishes at Whakapapa Village and is something you're sure to remember for many years.
